What a Great idea! Saving to favorites~

  2. anton says:

    660 is doubly given.

  3. ahemagain says:

The link given for the machine-processable text file, http://members.verizon.net/~vze48qpu/fdc.txt , yields a 404. I’d love to get that file to use as a starting place for a categorization scheme on my blog.

  4. Thanks for alerting me to that! It looks like Verizon reclaimed my space without telling me. Fortunately, I have a backup, and will post a copy to Github in the next few days. I’ll then update this page to point there.

FDC is not under active development at this time (it’s basically developed to the level I wanted it to be; and for that matter OCLC has made its DDC more open since I started this project). But I’m still happy to have folks use it, copy it, and remix it as they see fit. I might do one more update in the not too distant future after the Library of Congress publishes a new download file for LCSH on id.loc.gov (they’ve changed a few of the headings since I originally did this, and an up-to-date download file will let me quickly verify and update my LC correpsondences), and publish that update as “version 1.0”.

I would like to get a copy of the FDC.txt file but the link is stil broken and I don’t find it on Github either.

  5. ahemagain says:

I noticed that the full 1000 classes of the DDC were on wikipedia, and the last I remembered, it was just the top two levels previously available.
I’m still going to use your system as a starting point, although I’ll be making some fairly radical changes based on recent work verifying the Hierarchy of Science theory. Here’s a link to an interesting study on the subject. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3694152/

  6. John Mark Ockerbloom says:

My apologies for the delay in replacing the text file. I’ve posted the last edit, from 2010, to Github here:

    https://github.com/JohnMarkOckerbloom/fdc

(This replaces the version at the Verizon site which is now no longer available.)

As I mentioned in a comment above, I will probably update the file to reflect current LC headings (some of which have changed), label that as version 1.0, and then stop working on it. But you’re welcome to do with it what you like (it’s CC0 after all). For now, though, you at least have the latest machine-processable file to work with.

  7. James Smith says:

Many thanks for your work on this, exactly what we were looking for to use in our project.

    A correction:
975: Gulf States and Southwest, Old > 976
